If you or a loved one needs home care support in Alberta, you may be eligible for publicly funded services through the Client Directed Home Care Invoicing (CDHCI) program. This program, administered by Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Alberta Blue Cross, empowers Albertans to choose their preferred home care provider while receiving government-subsidized care.
At New Day Homecare, we're proud to be an approved CDHCI provider, helping families across the Greater Edmonton area access the care they need without the administrative burden of managing payments directly.
What is the CDHCI Program?
The Client Directed Home Care Invoicing (CDHCI) program is a province-wide initiative that allows eligible Albertans to receive publicly funded home care services from the private provider of their choice—rather than being assigned to an AHS care team.
Unlike the Self-Managed Care program (where clients hire and pay caregivers directly), CDHCI gives you the freedom to choose your provider while the approved agency handles everything: hiring caregivers, scheduling visits, managing care plans, and billing Alberta Blue Cross directly.
Key Benefit: You get personalized care from a provider you trust, with no out-of-pocket costs for AHS-approved hours and services.
Who is Eligible for CDHCI?
To qualify for the CDHCI program, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be an Alberta resident with a valid health care card
- Have care needs that can be safely met in your home
- Be assessed by an AHS Case Manager who determines CDHCI is suitable
- Be willing to self-direct your care or appoint a CDHCI manager
Note: You do not need an existing Alberta Blue Cross plan to be eligible. The program is available to all Alberta residents who meet the criteria above.
What Services Does CDHCI Cover?
Personal Care
Assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, transfers, and medication assistance
Homemaking Services
Essential tasks like cleaning, incontinence laundry, and removing garbage—when combined with personal care needs
Respite Care
Temporary relief for family caregivers when the client cannot be safely left alone
The specific services and hours you receive are determined by your AHS Case Manager based on your care assessment.

Common Questions About CDHCI
Do I have to pay anything out of pocket?
For services and hours approved by AHS, there are no out-of-pocket costs. If you require additional hours or services beyond what's approved, you may choose to pay privately for those extras.
How long does the approval process take?
After calling 811, an AHS Case Manager will typically contact you within a few weeks for an assessment. The full approval process varies depending on your situation and AHS scheduling.
Can I switch providers if I'm not satisfied?
Yes! One of the benefits of CDHCI is that you have the freedom to choose—and change—your approved provider at any time.
What if I need more hours than what's approved?
You can request a reassessment from AHS if your care needs change. Alternatively, you can work with your provider (like New Day Homecare) to add private-pay hours as needed.
